A landmark cinema turned dinner theatre

The first thing to understand is the building. The Roxy opened in 1938 as one of Copacabana's grand Art Deco cinemas and was a picture house for most of a century before being restored and reopened as a dinner-show venue. The auditorium is now a large dining room facing a wide stage under a luminous dome and LED panels that change with the performance, so the spectacle starts with the room. It's a big house, not an intimate cabaret.

How the night runs

Dinner guests are seated from 19:00 and eat a three-course Brazilian menu over about ninety minutes. At around 20:30 the show-only guests arrive and the curtain goes up on 'Aquele Abraço', which runs roughly ninety minutes and moves through Brazil's five geographic regions — the Amazon north, the northeast, the centre-west, the southeast and the south — with more than sixty performers, live percussion and a full-company finale. The evening ends a little before 22:30.

Choosing between the three tickets

The show-only ticket admits you for the performance alone at a fraction of the dinner price — the right choice if you'd rather eat elsewhere or keep the budget down. The dinner-and-show tier adds the three-course menu, with couvert and a choice of starters, mains and desserts. The premium tier widens the menu and adds a half bottle of sparkling wine or wine per person. Drinks are otherwise extra on every tier.

The rules worth knowing

Smart-casual dress; sportswear, bare feet, see-through clothing and costumes aren't admitted. Photos on a phone for personal use are fine, but professional cameras, tripods, gimbals, GoPros and flash aren't allowed. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. And the single most repeated piece of advice in reviews: the air conditioning is strong, so bring a sweater or jacket.

Booking with a safety net

Dinner tables sell out first, especially Friday and Saturday nights and through Rio's high season from December to Carnival. The GetYourGuide listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before and reserve-now-pay-later on most dates, so hold the tier and night you want as soon as your Rio dates are set and adjust later if you need to. The exact price for your date is shown in your own currency before you pay.
